Joining the British Society for Human Genetics

Eligibility for membership
Membership is open to people professionally involved with human genetics in the UK. People who are not based in the UK can become Overseas Affiliates; they are not eligible for election to the Council, but otherwise enjoy the same privileges as full members.

Applying for membership
Applications need to be proposed and seconded by two BSHG members. In case of difficulty with this, contact the BSHG office. The annual membership subscription is £55 from April 2009. Members of the British Society for Human Genetics can claim a tax deduction on their annual subscription. This has been approved by the Inland Revenue under Section 201 ICTA 1988, commencing 6th April 1996.

Companies can become corporate members, which gives them access to the mailing list and priority booking of exhibition space at BSHG meetings.

The constituent societies
Members of the BSHG may also wish to join one of the four constituent groups:
· Clinical Genetics Society (CGS)
· Clinical Molecular Genetics Society (CMGS)
· Association for Clinical Cytogenetics (ACC)
· Association of Genetic Nurses & Counsellors (AGNC)

There is no extra fee at present for doing this, but these four groups represent defined sets of professional workers, and restrict membership to people who fit their professional profile. Members of these groups are automatically members of the BSHG, but you don't have to join any of the constituent groups to be a member of the BSHG.

For people interested in Cancer Genetics, they may also join an associate group, the Cancer Genetics Group

Membership of the Cancer Genetics Group (CGG) can be:
Either
as part of the BSHG (£55 from April 2009)
Or as a member of one of the constituent groups (CGS, ACC etc) AND the CGG (extra subscription of £15; making a total of £70)

Affiliate Membership of the European Society of Human Genetics
Full membership of the European Society of Human Genetics is available at an additional fee of £30 making a total annual subscription of either £85 or £100. This is a special offer to members of the BSHG and is a reduction from the standard ESHG membership fee of £44.50 (55 Euros). The offer includes on-line access to the European Journal of Human Genetics and reduced registration for the ESHG annual conference. If you prefer to take out regular membership and receive a hard copy of the Journal, then please contact the ESHG direct on www.eshg.org/membership.htm

Note: Members of the British Society for Human Genetics can claim a tax deduction on their annual subscription. This is approved by the Inland Revenue under Section 201 ICTA 1988 and is backdated to 6th April 1996.

The BSHG listing is under: Human Genetics, British Soc for, in the 201 ICTA 1988 (31 Dec. 2002 edition)
