Work of the Joint Committee in progress (as of August 2002):

Training posts for genetic laboratory scientists - A working party (chair: Dr Stephen Abbs), with DoH representation, is identifying areas of concern over manpower numbers and training of staff for genetics laboratories.  The concern over metabolic biochemistry posts is included in the remit. 

National  Pregnancy Record - Professor Soothill’s working group has produced a report on  Antenatal Genetic History-Taking

Consent and Confidentiality Working Party The final draft of Dr Fiona Douglas's working party will shortly be circulated for consultation.

Genetics Education -

Guidance for Ethical Committees on Genetics - Dr Cyril Chapman’s working group has completed guidance which has been forwarded to the Central Office for Research Ethics Committees for circulation to local research ethics committees.

National Electronic Library for Health - The BSHG (Dr Phil Zack) is working hard on content for a genetics branch library be added to the National Electronic Library for Health.

Proposed Contracting Currencies - Professional groups on the Joint Committee have prepared proposed contracting currencies for molecular genetics, cytogenetics and clinical genetics, to be used for a trial period.  They are being reviewed by Commissioners.
