This exciting new course builds on the foundations of a highly successful cancer genetics education programme at The Royal Marsden Hospital, and has been further developed in line with the NHS Cancer Plan [2002] and the White Paper on genetics, ‘Our inheritance, our future - realising the potential of genetics in the NHS’ [DoH, 2003]. Aims and Outcomes of the Course The aim of the course is to provide an educational programme in Cancer Genetics to a Multi-Disciplinary audience. The learning outcomes of this course are: • To understand cancer genetic risk in depth and be able to critically assess cancer genetic syndromes; • To understand and examine issues surrounding the complexities of family dynamics and the cancer journey for families with a cancer predisposition; • Demonstrate knowledge of the relevant basic science and the laboratory procedures necessary to detect alteration in cancer predisposition genes; • Critically discuss the options for screening, surgery and other oncological and preventative treatments that may be available for high risk individuals and their families.
