Job Description and Person Specification
Applications are invited from State Registered Clinical Scientists with at least six years experience in diagnostic molecular genetics and the MRCpath part 1. Candidates should have a high level of specialist knowledge in a broad range of inherited disorders, excellent laboratory skills and a track record of scientific achievement. They should be able to demonstrate evidence of involvement in service development and supervision and training of other staff. The successful candidate will join a team of 17 scientists and 9 MLSOs/ Genetic Technologists in the Molecular Genetics Laboratory at the Northern Genetics Service where testing for a wide variety of inherited conditions is carried out. The laboratory is accredited and a member of the UK Genetic Testing Network. There is a close association with both the clinical genetics and cytogenetics sections of the department, and also with the high profile academic groups working in the Institute of Human Genetics research laboratories. The laboratory is housed in spacious purpose built accommodation at the Institute of Human Genetics close to Newcastle city centre and is equipped to a high level. As part of the GenLYNC arrangement there are close links with the Yorkshire Regional DNA laboratory in Leeds. The successful candidate for this post will be required to take responsibility for provision of a section of the laboratory service, including supervision of junior Scientific and Genetic Technologist staff. The successful candidate will also be expected to be involved in analysis, interpretation and reporting for a broad range of inherited disorders and to participate fully in the development of new techniques and the assimilation of new equipment and working methods into the laboratory. The appointee will be encouraged to prepare for the MRCPath part 2 examination.
